English Vocabulary: The face & hair

75

Hi there, my name is Rani and today I want to teach you about how we talk about facial

hair.

Basically the ones I have, hopefully, so far.

So, it would be very, very easy if we talked about face hair, but we can't say that.

We have to say facial hair and as you know by studying English, things are not as easy

as saying eye hair or for men, face hair, it just doesn't work out that way.

Two things that are easy are your nose, lots of old men have nose hair and also ear hair.

So those are the only two that are pretty simple.

So nose hair and ear hair.

Let's get into the more difficult ones.

I'm going to draw an egg, it's a face, we're going to make it a face.

We have our, let's call it our head hair, just to be funny, but it's actually just hair.

Also note that we don't say hairs, because hair is a non-count verb.

So we always refer to this just as hair.

You're going to say I had my hair cut, not my hairs.

I think we should say hairs, but we don't.

So moving down the face, we have, depends on the thickness of sign.

These are called eyebrows.

Some people have very, very thick eyebrows.

Some people take their eyebrows out and have very thin eyebrows.

But whatever you have, these are called eyebrows.

The next thing that we have, the other eye hair if you will, are, thing that ladies are

always trying to make longer and thicker, these hairs are called eye lashes.

This is the plural, the singular, which is the eye lash.

So we have eye lashes and eye lash.

We need some eyeballs for people so they can see, oh, what a lovely person.

Next we have the nose and the nose hair, uh-oh, should do something about that.

And then we're on to the mouth.

This is called a mouth.

This is your badly drawn nose, and this is your eye.

This one's for the men only, I hope, never know though.

We're going to talk about men's facial hair.

The first one we're going to start with is down here.

This part of your face is called your chin.

If a man has hair on his chin, it is called a goatee.

Do you know the word goat?

I think we got this word because goats, or whatever noise they make, will have hair on

their chinny chin chins.

The next fashion or style that men can have, oopsie, now this is one's ear, and as I mentioned

before, we can have ear hair, ooh-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la.

Usually older men have lots of long ear hairs, they're so attractive.

Some men like to have their hair extend down their face.

They can choose to shave it or grow it.

These are called, because they're at the side of your face, sideburns.

I don't know why they call them burns, because nothing is on fire, but I can understand the

side bit, sideburns.

The next one, which is very popular for men, is a mustache.

The mustache is the hair above the lip.

Sometimes when we're children or adults and we drink milk and we get the milk on the top

of our lip, we call it a milk mustache.

When I was a child it was really funny.

The facial hair above the lip is a mustache.

If you have completely grown all of your facial hair, does anyone know what that's called?

You've got your sideburns, you've got your goatee, you've got your mustache.

Santa Claus has one.

This is called a beard.

A beard is all of your facial hair growing in.

The pronunciation is like one of my favorite drinks, beer, "d".

So the pronunciation of this would be beard.

You can think of the pronunciation like this, very easy, goatee.

So today I went over a few of the basic facial hair that us humans have.

Dogs and cats have different ones, maybe that will be a lesson for the future.

I hope you enjoyed the lesson and to have a little quiz on this, go to www.engvid.com

and you can check your hair.

Bye.
