Speaking English - Nationalities - AMERICAN, RUSSIAN, IRAQI, SPANISH...

13

Hi, my name is Rebecca and in today's lesson we're going to do a little bit of pronunciation.

Pronunciation of nationalities, alright?

Now the words for nationalities have different endings, many different endings.

What I've done is I've taken six of the most common ones and I'd like to give you some

examples how to pronounce these, alright?

Now of course what you need to do is to find out what is the word for people from your

country, from your nation and learn that particular one very, very well because you will need

to use that.

But it's also important to be able to talk about other people and other nationalities

so let's look at some examples, okay?

You can repeat after me if you like, I will leave space for you to do that.

So one common ending or suffix is with -an as in American, Mexican, German, Moroccan,

Cuban, okay?

So as you can see we have just -an as the ending, alright?

Now with -ian we have countries like this, nationalities like this, Canadian, Russian,

Italian, Brazilian and Australian, alright?

See how because it's -ian we say it a little bit longer than the one where we have only

-an, okay?

Now we have -ish as in British, Spanish, Turkish, alright, good.

Sometimes you have only an -i as the ending as in Pakistani or Israeli or Iraqi, alright?

And the last one from our set of examples, it's not the last one, there are other endings

which I haven't covered here, but the last one here is with -en as in Korean, Chilean

and people from El Salvador are called Salvadorian, okay?

So here we see the -en ending.

So of course it is important to learn how to pronounce nationalities properly.

Just as we respect our nation, many people respect, most people respect their own nations

and when we pronounce the nationality correctly then we also show respect for them in that

way, alright?

So good luck with pronunciation of nationalities and if you'd like some more practice in various

aspects of English, please go to our website www.engvid.com.

Thanks very much.

Thanks for watching.

Bye-bye.
